How one apron becomes a successful business

It all started in 2014 from a simple search for a functional apron. One of the founders of Mental Syndicate took part in the first Barista Jam in Bulgaria – an event for coffee making professionals. He searched for a suitable apron and after failing to find one, he and his friends created their own model to suit the needs of baristas. What started as a personal need has turned into a thriving brand known for its durable, stylish and functional workwear.

Establishing a brand in a niche industry

Mental Syndicate is a handcrafted products brand that combines clean design and functionality. The original idea of founders Andon, Boris and Velimir was to create custom aprons for baristas, but the brand soon expanded its portfolio. Now Mental Syndicate offers a wide range of products such as backpacks, tool rolls and various accessories and equips professionals in many industries – from bars and restaurants to hobby studios and hotels.

Building the Mental Syndicate brand has not been without its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles they faced was sourcing materials to make their products. The founders quickly realised that finding high-quality materials locally was difficult. Additionally, for a small business making handmade products, gaining the trust of suppliers is a major struggle.

The founders of Mental Syndicate say that establishing themselves in the market as a niche brand has required a lot of effort. What helps them compete with big brands in the industry and gain loyal customers is personal touch, attention to detail and authenticity. One manager sums up their journey like this:

“A good idea is bound to tireless work and effort, and it always pays off.”

Attention to the customer as a core commitment

As Mental Syndicate grew, the brand’s founders sought a way to communicate more closely with their customers. So in 2018, they opened their concept store, which combines a product space, coffee corner and studio.

Andon, Boris and Velimir describe the store as their second home. It serves not only to sell products, but also as a social hub where customers can interact with them, learn more about the products and enjoy a cup of specialty coffee. This approach turns customers into friends and brand ambassadors, creating a strong community around Mental Syndicate.

Mental Syndicate’s commitment to certain core values helps them stand out in an ever-changing market landscape. Instead of chasing trends, the founders stay true to their beliefs. This authenticity creates a sense of trust and loyalty among customers.

“We don’t like to be influenced by trends and trendsetters. We have beliefs and understandings that are grounded and we like to stick to them.”

Expanding horizons with their own café

Continuing to expand their business, the founders of Mental Syndicate saw a natural progression – opening their own café. Given the founders’ deep connection to coffee culture, Coffee Syndicate was a logical next step for them. Coffee Syndicate was again born out of a desire for something they were looking for but unable to find, and so they created it themselves.

For Andon, Boris and Velimir, Coffee Syndicate is more than just a coffee shop; it embodies the same principles of quality and community that define Mental Syndicate. This new venture allows them to engage even more with their community while doing what they love. The café is quickly becoming a favourite spot for coffee connoisseurs and is strengthening the brand’s presence and reputation.

Optimising operations with myPOS

Mental Syndicate is a brand that stands for quality and functionality. That’s why from the very establishment of Coffee Syndicate they chose myPOS as their payment partner.

The founders appreciate the fast and seamless payment process that makes everything easier for them and their customers. For them, one of myPOS’ distinguishing features is the immediate transfer of paid amounts to the company’s account, allowing for efficient financial management.

“We have been working with myPOS since the opening of Coffee Syndicate and the payment process is as quick and easy as possible. And the best feature is that the paid amount enters the company’s account in seconds and you can check it immediately.”

This allows the business to address urgent needs and grow. Today, Andon, Boris and Velimir partner with brands such as Caffè Vergnano in Italy, Raketa Rakia Bar in Sofia and Irish brand Jameson, for which they even created an apron with a 3D pocket to perfectly fit a bottle of whiskey. The three are a great example of how an idea can develop into a successful business with perseverance and tireless effort.
